“I really like these industrial and steampunk-inspired collectibles. Is it possible to create this style in my home?” At our initial meeting, the homeowner showcased beloved collectibles, expressing his aspirations for his home.
Steampunk, an imaginative blend of steam power and technology from the 1980s-90s, is vividly depicted in renowned Studio Ghibli films like Howl’s Moving Castle and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, featuring machinery, gears, and pipelines. Yet, for a residence, incorporating an abundance of metal artifacts within a limited budget is challenging. Hence, we contemplated not merely replicating the visuals of the steampunk era but seeking a spatial ambiance that intertwines retro aesthetics with a futuristic touch.
Starting with spatial materials, we extensively used walnut veneer with a herringbone parquet floor, establishing a stable yet modern and upscale atmosphere. Subsequently, we selected materials that genuinely evoke the steampunk era, substituting antique glass for clear glass, introducing aged textures in the mirrored reflections. Metal frames crafted the bedroom and dining room ceilings, subtly referencing the iconic Crystal Palace with its arched lines. LED strip lights allowed the ambiance to adapt to various scenarios, providing a space that oscillates between retro and futuristic depending on usage. Furthermore, punctuating elements like perforated panels, rotating tables, and floral wallpapers added distinctive touches, setting an ambiance that seamlessly blends the vintage with the contemporary.
Steampunk, born from the homeowner’s interest, was expanded into a lifestyle aesthetic, creating a unique fusion of living and artistry.
